The internet is one of the world's greatest climate sinners. On September 5th Professor Leif Katsuo Oxenløwe will hold a lecture about why the Internet is still to be considered one of the world's greatest weapons in the fight against climate change.

The Internet uses almost 10% of all electricity produced and is considered to be responsible for approximately 2% of man-made CO2 emissions. At the same time, in the last 10 years there has been a slowdown in the development of communication technologies, creating a concern that the Internet's energy consumption will explode in the coming years. Despite this, there are great expectations that the Internet can contribute to reducing the man-made climate impact, and even considerably so.
How does it add up?
In this lecture, Leif Katsuo Oxenløwe will describe how increased digitalization can help in the fight against climate change and how light is a key to the development of energy-efficient communication technologies. Every day, almost a billion short information-carrying flashes of light are sent around the globe. This light is created by millions of lasers, but the basic research center SPOC (Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications) has just shown that a single special light source can carry the entire internet's data traffic.
